The Imagery of Chess Revisited William Packer
Book Description The Imagery of Chess Revisited recovers a celebrated and extraordinary moment in art history: the 1944-45 exhibition The Imagery of Chess , held at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City. The exhibit was a legend in its owntime and has been considered a singular event in the history of art exhibitions ever since. The show's organizers?the influential art dealer Julien Levy, the Surrealist painter Max Ernst, and Dada leader Marcel Duchamp, himself a serious chess player?invited a virtual "who's who" of artists and members of the cultural avant-garde to redesign the standard chess set or otherwise explore chess imagery and its symbolism in bold new ways. Participants included famous European expatriates and soon-to-be famous American modernists: Andre Breton, Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Ernst, Man Ray, Isamu Noguchi, and Yves Tanguy are among those who contributed chess sets; John Cage and Vittorio Rieti created original musical scores; and......

George Stubbs : The Complete Engraved Works Christopher Lennox-Boyd
Book Description In a period when access to fine paintings was restricted, Stubbs's reputation was spread chiefly through his engravings. This catalogue raisonne is the only single volume to contain all Stubbs's known engravings and provides acomplete record of prints made by others after his works. Introductory essays consider Stubbs's relationships with other artists, particularly his engravers, and examine how the prints were originally marketed. Part 1 covers the more important prints issued during Stubbs's lifetime, some of which are published here for the first time. Each of the 218 entries is fully illustrated and accompanied by comparative material. Part 2 comprises 440 supplementary entries and indicates the nature and extent of Stubbs's posthumous reputation. This book also is the first substantial review of the work of a major 18th century British painter by reference to the important, but neglected, medium of reproductive prints....

Audiophotography: Bringing Photos to Life with Sounds (The Computer Supported Cooperative Work Series) David M. Frohlich
Book Description There are many practitioner books on different branches and styles of photography (e.g. landscape, studio, American, etc). Some of these even cover digital photography, as it exists today. However, there are very few research books on the meaning and practice of domestic photography, and almost none on the potential impact of digital technology on this important and widespread behaviour. Audiophotography combines a detailed "user studies" approach to photography, with consumers' own critiques of new media content they have generated themselves. It is therefore a new book about domestic photography and its possible transformation with digital technology. Although it focuses on the role of sound in photography, it does so in relation to a new theory of photography which is tested and refined by empirical research. Such work is timely because of current interest in new media forms and the wide variety of new photography and video......
