Consuming Subjects Elizabeth Kowaleski-Wallace
Consuming Subjects is an insightful exploration of the origin of the modern idea of women as shoppers. Kowaleski-Wallace considers the origins of current ideas about women and consumerism to call into question the "natural" link between women and the commodities they buy. While previous scholars have posited the nineteenth-century department store and arcade as the crucial place for understanding the emergence of the female consumer, Kowaleski-Wallace argues that the eighteenth century yields a keener understanding by allowing us to view the foundations of contemporary cultural practices. Drawing on feminist criticism, cultural studies, and new historical ideas, she surveys eighteenth-century literary texts, material objects -such as china- and cultural events to illuminate the ways in which women are both controlled and empowered through images of consumption. Kowaleski-Wallace links the rise of shopping to the appearance of modern pronography: like pornography,......

People & Ideas in Theoretical Computer Science (Springer Series in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science) Cristian Calude, C. S. Calude
Theory and theoreticians have played a major role in computer science. Many insights into the nature of efficient computations were gained and theory was crucial for some of the most celebrated engineering triumphs of computer science (e.g., in compiler design, databases, multitask operating systems, to name just a few). Theoretical computer science (TCS) functions as a communication bridge between computer science and other subjects, notably, mathematics, linguistics, biology; it is a champion in developing unconventional models of computation (DNA, quantum). This book collects personal accounts and reflections of fourteen eminent scientists who have dedicated themselves to the craft of TCS. Contributions focus on authors specific interests, experiences, and reminiscences. The emerging picture, which is just one among other possible ones, should be a catalyst for further developments and continuations. Was most interested to learn about the project, which should be a worthwhile one."......

With its helpful critique of the selections, extensive bibliography, and clear presentation of the material, Computation and Intelligence will be a useful adjunct to any course in AI as well as a handy reference for professionals in the field. The book is divided into five parts, each reflecting the stages of development of AI. The first part, Foundations,, contains readings that present or discuss foundational ideas linking computation and intelligence, typified by A. M. Turing's "Computing Machinery and Intelligence." The second part, Knowledge Representation, presents a sampling of numerous representational schemes by Newell, Minsky, Collins & Quillian, Winograd, Schank, Hayes, Holland, McClelland, Rumelhart, Hinton, and Brooks. The third part, Weak Method Problem Solving, fouses on the research and design of syntax-based problem......
