The Dynamics of Public Policy: Theory And Evidence (New Horizons in Public Policy) Adrian Kay
In The Dynamics of Public Policy, Adrian Kay sets out the crucial methodological, theoretical and empirical implications of two important trends in the social sciences: a frequently expressed ambition for analysis of `movies not stills' and the regular observation that policy, politics and governance is becoming more complex. Beginning with a discussion of the centrality of temporality, change and history to the social sciences, he develops the provocative claim that existing models of the policy process are of limited value in understanding and explaining policy dynamics. Instead, the author argues that it is only through structured narratives that we can really understand and explain complex policy histories. He sets out a methodology for structuring policy narratives and illustrates the claims of the book through four detailed case studies: health policy and pharmaceutical regulation in the UK; and agricultural policy and budget policy in the EU. Adrian......

An Eponymous Dictionary Of Economics: A Guide To Laws And Theorems Named After Economists (Elgar Original Reference)
An Eponymous Dictionary of Economics is a fascinating and accessible reference work with comprehensive coverage of the field of economics from Adam Smith's Problem through Minkowski's Theorem to Zellner's Estimator. Eponymy - the practice of affixing the name of the scientist to all or part of what he/she has found - has many interesting features but only a very few attempts have been made to tackle the subject lexicographically in science and art. This is the first eponymous dictionary of economics ever published in any language. There are hundreds of eponyms and the average economist will probably be acquainted with, let alone be able to master, a relatively restricted number of them. The Dictionary fills this void in a manageable volume that describes all relevant economic eponyms. Some rare but interesting eponyms are also included, many entries are cross-referenced and all have a succinct bibliography for further reading. Julio Segura and Carlos RodrAguez Braun have assembled a......

Legendary Watering Holes: The Saloons That Made Texas Famous (Clayton Wheat Williams Texas Life Series) David Bowser, Nancy Hamilton, Chuck Parsons
Saloons, barrooms, honky-tonks, or watering holes--by whatever name, they are part of the mythology of the American West, and their stories are cocktails of legend and fact, as Richard Selcer, David Bowser, Nancy Hamilton, and Chuck Parsons demonstrate in these accounts of four legendary Texas establishments. In most Western communities, the first saloon was built before the first church, and the drinking establishments far outnumbered the religious ones. Beyond their obvious functions, saloons served as community centers, polling places, impromptu courtrooms, and public meeting halls. Here, the spotlight is thrown on four celebrated saloons: Jack Harris's Saloon and Vaudeville Theater San Antonio Ben Dowell's Saloon El Paso The Iron Front Austin The White Elephant Fort Worth Selcer and his coauthors start with the origins of each establishment and follow their stories until the last drink was served and the places closed down for good. They discuss all......
