The Provincetown Players and the Playwrights' Theatre, 1915-1922 Edna Kenton
Book DescriptionThe feminist writer and editor Edna Kenton (1876?1954) was elected to the Executive Committee of the Provincetown Players by 1916. This theatrical company, first to present the plays of Eugene O?Neill, rebelled against the commercialism of Broadway and gave unrecognized dramatists the opportunity to experiment. Kenton was a great admirer of company leader George Cram Cook, and when Cook died in Greece in the early 1920s, Kenton dedicated herself to upholding his vision of a Dionysian ideal in American theater. This is Kenton?s original history of the influential theatre, from the first seasons at Provincetown in 1915 and 1916, to the final New York season in 1922. This invaluable eyewitness account has been edited from the most complete and latest version of Kenton?s text, with consultation of earlier incomplete versions. Kenton transcribed many playbills into the text, and included others whole between the pages; the latter are included as......

50 Great Adventures: Extraordinary Places And the People Who Built Them Jonathan Lee
Book DescriptionArchitecture meets biography in this highly personal exploration of some of the world?s most provocative, revealing, and beautifully built structures. In this unique and visually stimulating volume, fifty buildings from around the world are explored through the people who created them. Organized according to the idea that architecture is a result of basic human desires to live, work, pray, play, and stay?50 Great Adventures in Architecture traces architecture back to the people who made it happen. Offering a global spectrum of illuminating architectural destinations, the book journeys from Lanzarote, Spain, home of Cesar Manrique?s Jameos del Agua grotto, a James Bond style fantasy for its creator to India, the site of Nek Chand?s Rock Garden of Chandigarh, a realization of the architect?s childhood dream; and from Arizona where Paolo Soleri?s Arcosanti, a vision for a utopian community, shimmers in the Southwestern desert to......

A Portrait of Mendelssohn Clive Brown
Book DescriptionSince his death in 1847, Felix Mendelssohn?s music and personality have been both admired and denigrated to extraordinary degrees. In this valuable book Clive Brown weaves together a rich array of documents?letters, diaries, memoirs, reviews, news reports, and more?to present a balanced and fascinating picture of the composer and his work. Rejecting the received view of Mendelssohn as a facile, lightweight musician, Brown demonstrates that he was in fact an innovative and highly cerebral composer who exerted a powerful influence on musical thought into the twentieth century. Brown discusses Mendelssohn?s family background and education; the role of religion and race in his life and reputation; his experiences as practical musician (pianist, organist, string player, conductor) and as teacher and composer; the critical reception of his works; and the vicissitudes of his posthumous reputation. The book also includes a range of hitherto unpublished......
